Catalog & Navigation
Everything a shopper browses comes from your BigCommerce catalog. This page covers what your storefront reads, how it's presented, and the handful of settings that change that presentation.
What your storefront reads
| From BigCommerce | Where it appears |
|---|---|
| Categories and the category tree | Navigation menu, category landing pages, footer links |
| Brands | Footer, and optionally the header |
| Products | Listing pages, product detail pages, search results |
| Prices, including sale prices | Listings, product pages, cart |
| Stock and availability | Product pages and listings |
| Automatic promotions | Cart totals |
| Currency | Everywhere a price is shown |
| Store name, contact details, social links | Header and footer |
Products and categories are channel-scoped in BigCommerce. If something isn't visible to your Evolve channel it won't appear on your storefront, however correct it looks in the BigCommerce admin. This is the single most common cause of "a product is missing", so check channel visibility first.
Navigation
Your main navigation menu is generated from your BigCommerce category tree. There's no separate menu to maintain: reorder or rename a category in BigCommerce and the menu follows.
How many levels appear is controlled by the navigationDepth setting, which defaults to three. Raise it to expose deeper subcategories, lower it for a simpler menu. See Store Settings.
The footer is assembled from three sources:
| Footer column | Source |
|---|---|
| Categories | Your BigCommerce category tree |
| Brands | Your BigCommerce brands, controlled by the footerBrands setting |
| Pages | Your BigCommerce web pages |
Social icons come from your BigCommerce social media settings, and are matched automatically to the right platform.
To add a brands entry to the header as well, enable headerBrands.
Listing pages
Category and search listings share the same presentation:
- Facets and filters built from your product attributes, so shoppers can narrow by the things you actually sell.
- Sorting by relevance, name, best selling, top rated and newest.
- Add to cart from the listing, controlled by the
plpAddToCartsetting. It's on for category listings and off for search results by default, which you can invert or override per category. - Pagination as shoppers work through a large category.
Search
Search runs against your BigCommerce catalog and includes:
- Type-ahead suggestions as the shopper types.
- Faceted results with the same filters as category listings.
- Voice search — a microphone in the search box on browsers that support it, controlled by
voiceSearchand on by default.
Evolve Image Search adds a camera icon to the search box, so shoppers can find products by uploading or taking a photo. That helps most in catalogs where shoppers know what something looks like but not what it's called.
Pricing and promotions
List price and sale price are both read from BigCommerce, and where a product is on sale the storefront shows the list price struck through alongside the current price.
Automatic promotions configured in BigCommerce are reflected in cart totals. The discount line is hidden when it's zero, which you can change with hideDiscountIfZero.
The storefront's in-cart promo code field is off for BigCommerce stores. Because checkout runs on BigCommerce, shoppers enter discount codes there. Make sure your marketing tells them so. "Enter code SUMMER at checkout" is accurate; "enter code in your cart" is not. See Shopper Accounts & Checkout.
Prices are visible to unauthenticated visitors by default. If you sell to trade only, guestSeePrices hides them until a shopper signs in. Note that this also removes price from social link previews. See SEO.
Currency
Your storefront displays prices in the currency BigCommerce returns for your channel. Multi-currency selection on the storefront isn't available today. If you need it, talk to us.
